I believe that living a happy life is also about appreciating the things that you already have and not screwing things up for yourself. As I’ve said before in my article Life And Problems, life has an annoying way of sneaking up on you and throwing shit in your face just when you think everything is doing well. But in another sense, we also have the capacity to make our life more complicated than it should be. Sometimes things are just fine the way they are but we don’t really realize it-until we try to fix things and make matters worse. Here is my second take on how to live a happy life.
1. Living a Happy Life Means Counting Your Blessings
Well this may be one of the most cliched pieces of advice there is, given to people who keep complaining, given by people who are tired of being complained to. But, we have to accept the fact that it won’t be so used up if it wasn’t true. Count the good things in your life, I’m pretty sure there’s something you can be thankful about. Ignore the bitterness for a moment and think of the things you already have and should be happy about and that’s it. Plain and simple. You’re life may not be as screwed up as you think it is so just relax and be happy.
2. Living a Happy Life Means Keeping Expectations Within a Realistic Level
Sometimes, we just fail to realize that things are already fine, but because we’re just far too ambitious or discontented or whatever synonym you can think of, we just don’t appreciate it and we think that it’s still not good enough. That is why we never seem to be happy. Having goals and dreams is a good thing, but you should know your own limits in order to avoid frustration. If I sound like I’m discouraging you, please know I’m not. What I’m just saying is that you should learn to keep your expectations within the bounds of reality. I hope you got what I meant.
3. Living a Happy Life Means Knowing When To Stop
True, we have limitless potentials and there is an infinite number of possibilities, but that does not mean that we should keep pursuing after all the things that we haven’t gotten yet. Sometimes, chasing after all the possibilities can be counter-productive because all you’ll be able to see is what you don’t have, rather than the things you already have. I can’t exactly say when enough is enough so I’ll just give this simple guide: It’s okay to chase after the things you don’t have as long as you don’t throw away the things that you already have. I hope that made sense but like I said above, just count your blessings and you’ll see that you have a reason to be happy.
4. Living A Happy Life Means Knowing What is Important to You
In relation to the one above, you should at least have an idea about the things that are important to you. You should know the things you don’t want to lose, and keep it etched deeply in your head(or heart whatever) so you won’t unknowingly throw them away. Confused? I’ll just use a movie/TV show example. You know those shows where a couple lives a happy marriage until the guy becomes obsessed with his job and neglects his wife and they end up getting a divorce and then he comes back begging for another chance? Just because I grabbed it off a movie/TV show does not mean it doesn’t happen in real life and you know it. You may already be living a happy and perfect life, so don’t screw it up for yourself by neglecting the important things in your life.
5. Living A Happy Life Can Also Mean Knowing There’s Always Someone Who Has It Worse Than You
As much as I hate making comparisons between people, it’s an undeniable truth. You think you’re living the worst possible life there is? Well the fact that you’re reading this right now means you have internet access and seriously, that’s already one sign that you have it better than many other people. You see, there are people out there who haven’t even heard of the word “internet”. Worse, there are millions of people who can’t even read so you’re already living a better life than many other people. There is no reason for you to hate your life so much, and now you have two additional reasons to be happy because there are more people out there who have bigger problems than you but they just keep living their lives.
