The Key To Lasting Happiness

What is the key to lasting happiness? Everybody wants to be happy. Everybody wants to feel complete, to feel satisfied and not need anything else. Basically everything we do is in pursuit of happiness and yet nothing really ever seems to last. You’re happy one moment, and you can be miserable the next. Is there a key to lasting happiness? Is there some way to be happy forever and not want anything else?

For a moment, think about the happiest memory you have. Think about that moment and picture it in your head. That moment when you felt like you were the happiest person in the world and that you didn’t want anything else. Now if you don’t have such a memory, think instead of one thing, one event that would make you the happiest person on earth. Now would you want to stay in that moment forever? Would you like to feel the way that felt all your life? Shouldn’t that be the key to lasting happiness?

Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way. Even the happiest moments, or the things that had once made you happy won’t keep making you happy. Eventually the happiness you get from that one thing or that one moment fades into just a happy memory. I don’t want to sound so grim, but whether you like it or not, that’s just how it is. Life isn’t about getting stuck on one moment, it’s always about moving on to new things that would make you happy. It’s a constant struggle. If life works that way, is there such a key to lasting happiness?

It’s often so much easier to be unhappy than to be happy. All you have to do to be unhappy is think about the things you don’t have, while in order to be happy, you have to work in order to gain the things you want. Once you get something that makes you happy, as time goes by it gets old and the amount of happiness derived from that thing diminishes. You’re no longer as happy as you were the moment you got it. You want more, you want something else. Is there no true key to lasting happiness?

On the other hand, some people say that the key to lasting happiness is all a matter of perspective. You can always choose to be happy with what you have. You can always choose the thoughts that would make you happy. If it was that easy, then why isn’t everyone happy? Why are there depressed people? Why are there people who keep struggling to find the key to lasting happiness? Why am I even writing this and planting the question in your minds if the key to lasting happiness is just to change the way you see things?

Personally, I think that there is no one key to lasting happiness, but instead we have to keep working to find new keys to unlock new ways to be happy. Some people believe that there is a true key to lasting happiness. That there is just this one thing that once they get it, they’re set for life and they won’t want anything else. I’ll admit, I was once such person, and I proved myself wrong. Lasting happiness isn’t just one thing or one moment. It’s a constant search for new ways to be happy. That is just my opinion. I am again but trying to raise a question. What is your key to lasting happiness?

Thanks for reading and may you come up with a better answer and if you do, please feel free to share it with everyone reading!

Lasting Happiness is the ultimate goal of human life…I guess everyone has their own unique key…what makes one person happy might be other person’s nightmare..to give an example y, on the other handsome people have fun at parties n they make them happy, on the other hand I am always like, why do I need to go?? I’d be happier sitting at home reading/reflecting/simply lounging…

I see the key as always having something to look forward to, learning from your past and trying to be present in the moment you’re in. So hard and maybe not even possible, but the looking forward to things bit helps. Great post without a cliche or rote answer.
